Moselle's Skate Kitchen was nominated for the Best of Next! Audience Award at this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered back in January. Its opening weekend competition will include Jason Statham's giant shark thriller The Meg, as well as Spike Lee's new buzzed-about true story based offering, BlacKkKlansman. Moselle's film starts playing in select theaters in the U.S. Joining Smith and the Skate Kitchen's members in the movie's cast are names like Elizabeth Rodriguez ( Orange in the New Black) and Star Wars Rebels voice actor Taylor Gray. Written by Moselle, Jen Silverman ( Ink), and Aslihan Ünaldi ( Young Wrestlers), Skate Kitchen introduces real-life skater Rachelle Vinberg as Camille, an introverted teenager who joins the titular group: an all-girl skateboarding collective based in New York.
THE SKATE KITCHEN MOVIE MOVIE
The movie further reunites Moselle with several members of the real-life Skate Kitchen group after their previous collaboration on the 2016 short That One Day. Skate Kitchen itself is Moselle's second feature length effort as a director, following her work on the documentary The Wolfpack (which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival). It's an appropriate day for the trailer to drop online too, seeing as it's national Go Skateboarding Day.
